Social housing (known as vivienda de protección oficial or VPO in Spain) is aimed at facilitating access to housing for people with financial need. Regulated by public authorities, these properties usually have a lower price, both for sale and rent.
To qualify for a VPO, you must not exceed a maximum income level (set by each regional government or comunidad autónoma), you must reside in the community, and meet other social and economic requirements. Access is typically granted through invitations or lotteries organised by the administration.
Social housing also comes with certain restrictions: it must be used as a primary residence and, generally, cannot be sold or rented out for a minimum period of 10 years.
